EGMONT AND CLARA VULLIAMY TEAM UP TO RELAUNCH CLASSIC CHILDREN’S SERIES THE ADVENTURES OF MARY PLAIN
– Renowned children’s illustrator to recreate beloved series –
Egmont Publishing has signed award-winning author and illustrator, Clara Vulliamy to illustrate beautiful new editions of the beloved Mary Plain series by Gwynedd Rae.
Melissa Fairley, Publishing Director at Egmont Publishing, secured the deal with Hilary Delamere at The Agency (London) Ltd.
Mary Plain is an orphan bear cub who lives with her relatives in the bear pits at Berne Zoo, Switzerland. A delightful but rather unusual bear, with a huge personality and an appetite to match, you never quite know what escapades she’ll get up to next! The original text has been lovingly reproduced in sumptuous hardback editions, complete with gold foiling. The first book in the series, Mostly Mary, will publish alongside book two, All Mary, in February 2017. Books three and four will follow in September 2017.
Melissa Fairley said of the collaboration: ‘It’s wonderful to have Mary Plain join Egmont’s classic characters, such as Winnie the Pooh and The Hundred and One Dalmatians. It has been an absolutely joy to work with Clara – her enthusiasm and passion for this project was inspiring.’
Clara Vulliamy said of the series: ‘I have loved Mary Plain since I was very young, and I’ve longed to illustrate her stories ever since I could first properly hold a pencil. There has been a Mary-shaped gap in the cast list of classic bears in children’s books for far too long. I’m so proud and happy to see the gloriously inventive, enchanting and entertaining writings of Gwynedd Rae restored, and for Mary to take her rightful place again at last.’
Welsh author Gwynedd Rae (1892-1977) was the creator of the much-loved Mary Plain series. The first book in the series, Mostly Mary, was published in 1930 and the last, Mary Plain’s Whodunnit, was published in 1965. The series includes 14 books about Mary’s adventures.
Clara Vulliamy has illustrated over 35 children’s books. She is the daughter of author and illustrator, Shirley Hughes and together they created the Dixie O’Day series. She lives in Twickenham with her husband and has two grown-up daughters. http://claras.me
