Egmont Press and Egmont Publishing are committed to minimising their impact on the environment and to the responsible use of natural resources.
Through our suppliers we are responsible for the purchase of significant volumes of paper to be used in the production of our books. We are committed to sourcing material from environmentally and socially responsible sources like recycled fibre and that from legal and well managed forests.
However, we recognise that supply chains for paper product are complex and it will take us some time to assure ourselves that all material comes from sources meeting these requirements. The following principles illustrate our staged approach.
We expect all suppliers to know the primary source(s) of the paper that they supply and report this information to us on request.
No order will be placed with a supplier until information on the paper source has been provided and the paper has met our minimum standards as set out below.
We positively encourage our suppliers to maximise the use of post-consumer recycled fibre in the production of Egmont titles where technical and customer requirements allow.
We will ensure that as a minimum, any virgin material in our supply chain comes from legal sources. Further:
we will not use species listed under Appendix I of the CITES convention;
for any species listed under CITES Appendices II or III we require the appropriate permits and certificates to have been obtained;
we will not accept any material sourced from any subsidiary company of Asia Pulp and Paper;
we will pay particular attention to those countries and regions in the World which have a poor record on forest management issues and request detailed and specific assurance that wood from these countries is legally sourced.
We are committed to working with our suppliers to phase out paper sourced from ancient and High Conservation Value Forests (HCVFs) unless strict conservation safeguards are in place.
We are committed to sourcing increasing volumes of virgin fibre from well managed forests and have adopted the principles and criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as our benchmark. The FSC is an internationally recognised forest certification standard audited by an independent certification body.
