Safety first
Egmont is committed to producing consistently safe and reliable books that will bring joy to children’s lives. We employ a number of methods to ensure the safety of our products, all of which have earned us a reputation within the publishing industry:
“We always knew that Egmont was a benchmark for safety.”
Jo Scott, Head of Quality, WH Smith, on the occasion of winning the WHS supplier of quality 2002.
Product Safety Assessment
At the core of our product safety policy is our Product Safety Assessment (PSA). Every one of our products that has any form of play value, will go through a PSA process. This allows us to make safe product, without compromising the creativity of the initial concept.
Intended use and foreseeable use
We all know that children are curious and imaginative. Children obviously read books but we also recognize they can enjoy chewing them, throwing them, tearing them, and many other foreseeable uses! It is for this reason that we do not just assess the safety implications if the child uses the product appropriately; we also extensively research the safety implications of a child using the product imaginatively. In this way we assess the risks of all potential uses.
Not hiding behind warnings
Through our comprehensive PSA process we define the age range at which the content of our product is attractive. Unfortunately, there are some (non Egmont) products in the market place which are clearly attractive to two or three year olds, and yet the warnings on the covers say the ‘product is not suitable for children under 36 months’. We will never use a warning inappropriately!
If an Egmont title has an age warning you can be assured that the content will have been carefully designed not to be attractive to a younger age group and, wherever possible, we will ensure that the product is safe for all ages.
