Egmont Publishing is thrilled to have struck a two-book deal with the wonderful Nat Luurtsema.
Opie Jones Talks to Animals, the first book in the Opie Jones series, is an animal-themed superhero comedy about a girl who can read animal minds.
Nat Luurtsema is a comedian, author, film-maker and secret animal mind-reader. She was nominated for a BAFTA for her first short film, collaborates in comedy writers’ rooms and occasionally co-hosts popular podcast The Guilty Feminist.
She was just minding her own business one day when her cat, Margot, commanded her to write this book.
Liz Bankes, Commissioning Editor, signed the deal for world rights in all languages with Hellie Ogden at Janklow & Nesbitt. The illustrated middle-grade series will publish on 06 August 2020, with a second book to follow in 2021.
About the Book
10-year-old Opie Jones is quite used to being totally unremarkable, and so she’s rather surprised to be recruited to join The Resistance – a team of mind-reading superheroes.
Then it turns out Opie can’t read human minds – she can read ANIMAL ones. The Resistance are very disappointed – how is chatting to dogs and worms going to help them defeat a dastardly, brainwashing villain?
But when The Resistance find themselves in trouble, it’s down to Opie and her animal gang to save the day.
Nat said, “I’m so excited to introduce Opie Jones, thanks to Egmont. These books are about the pressure to be special, the importance of compassion to all living things and why a cat sidekick is a doomed idea that will end in injury and blame.”
Margot the cat said, ‘I won’t bother to read it but I expect a share of the royalties.’
Liz Bankes, Commissioning Editor, said, “We LOVE funny books here at Egmont and are long-time fans both of Nat’s comedy and her writing, so we’re thrilled to welcome her to the list – along with the wonderful Opie Jones, Margot the cat, Malcolm the guinea pig therapist and about 18 pigeons.”
Join the Resistance with Opie in Opie Jones Talks to Animals by Nat Luurtsema, publishing 06 August 2020 in paperback.
