Egmont Publishing and bestselling, multi-award-winning author Andy Stanton are set to unleash a whole new cast of characters into the world with The Paninis of Pompeii – the long-awaited new series from the comic genius behind Mr Gum.
Overflowing with Andy’s trademark wordplay and surreal escapades, this is Pompeii as you’ve NEVER imagined it before.
Join fart-trader Caecilius; his wife, Vesuvius; his ten-year-old son, Filius; their household servant, Slavius, and the family dog, Barkus Wooferinicum, as they stumble across pizza-emitting volcanoes, accidental gladiators and the terrifying legend of the ‘ma-wol-n-f’. If you thought the world of Mr Gum was bonkers, just wait until you meet the Paninis – they’re off the Richter scale!
Liz Bankes, Fiction Commissioning Editor at Egmont UK, signed the deal for World Rights with Eve White at Eve White Literary Agency. The Paninis of Pompeii will launch in July 2019, with second and third books publishing in February 2020 and August 2020 respectively. The books will be illustrated by Sholto Walker, who has 25 years’ experience in children’s books and is a long-time fan of Andy’s work.
More news for nibbleheads
Not content to let the Paninis have all the fun, Mr Gum is also making a whole lot of noise this year.
To celebrate the fast approaching four millionth copy sold in the UK, all eight titles in the Mr Gum series are getting a bold new look in May 2019. Featuring striking new branding, neon colours and sprayed edges, these editions will invite a new generation of nibbleheads to the gloriously mad world of Mr Gum, and will be a must-have for any fan’s collection.
The Mr Gum series has already been translated into 32 languages, adapted as audiobooks by the BBC, and won multiple awards: including the Red House Children’s Book Award, two Blue Peter Book Awards and the inaugural Roald Dahl Funny Prize. A major, year-long marketing and PR campaign will see the Paninis and Mr Gum run riot in schools, libraries and festivals across the country in 2019 . . . you have been warned.
And as if that wasn’t enough for the world’s nastiest old villain, Mr Gum has escaped from Lamonic Bibber and is currently plotting to steal the show (and any stray bears) as Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear prepares for its musical debut at London’s National Theatre.
Opening in July 2019, with a script and songs written by Andy, the musical will see Polly and Friday attempt to rescue Padlock the bear from the clutches of Mr Gum and Billy William III.
Liz Bankes says ‘As the very proud publishers of Natboff and Mr Gum, a series that has already hooked one generation of children on reading, we are utterly thrilled with this incredible programme of publishing for Andy this year. Nibbleheads everywhere are going to be howling with laughter and 2019 will cement Andy’s reputation as the funniest children’s author in history.’
