Children’s author, singer-songwriter and vlogger Tom Fletcher has selected You’re a Bad Man Mr Gum by Andy Stanton as one of the books in his book club.
For the Tom Fletcher Book Club, exclusive to WHSmith, ten great titles were picked by Tom for children aged between seven and eleven years. The aim is to get kids excited about reading and talking about books.
For the next two weeks, the star of the show is the popular Mr Gum by Andy Stanton, illustrated by David Tazzyman.
Mr Gum is a complete horror who hates children, animals, fun and corn on the cob. This book’s all about him. And an angry fairy who lives in his bathtub. And Jake the dog, and a little girl called Polly and an evil, stinky butcher all covered in guts. And there’s heroes and sweets and adventures and EVERYTHING.
You’re a Bad Man, Mr Gum is the first ever Mr Gum book, first published by Egmont Publishing in 2006. There are eight brilliant books in the series. It’s won numerous awards, including the inaugural Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Red House Children’s Book Award and two Blue Peter Book Awards.
In his review for the Tom Fletcher Book Club on WHSmith, Tom says: ‘This is another book that might be on my list of possible favourite ever books ever. As you kids would say I did a LOL many times throughout this book and it even inspired me to start writing my second novel (which is also really super brilliant!). The way the narrator speaks to the reader makes it so enjoyable to read with really short, punchy chapters. You’ll reach the end before you know it and want to start all over again.’
